I was wondering what does chanting mean?

Q: Chanting helps me focus, what does it all mean? I really enjoy coming to Yoga classes at Yoga Awareness. The chanting we do at the beginning of class always helps me focus, and leads me into a more internal awareness. I was wondering though, what does it all mean? Do you have an English translation?

A: The 'Saha Na' chant is a non-sectarian and non-religous invocation that is typically chanted before every class starts. This in an invocation made between the Teacher and the Student reminding us both of our commitment, to maintaining a healthy relationship as we journey together on the path of Yoga. This path is guaranteed to cause change and transformation through both difficult and good times.

It becomes a protection for us both. It strengthens our commitment, obligations and responsibilities as Teacher and Student.

On the last line of the invocation we chant 'shanti' three times, which means peacefulness and tranquility at the levels of my body (actions), breath (speech) and mind (thoughts). The constant remembrance of this invocation will create positive change and transformation on our Yoga path.
