Yoga Awareness ~ The International School of Yoga & Ayurveda

PatanjaliThe Yoga Awareness LEVEL 10 KAIVALYAM training is for 2 weeks on the tropical island of Maui. Ted Surman presents an in-depth study of Yoga and Ayurveda which empowers us to deepen our daily practice and to share with others. We study and practice Raja Yoga, which means ‘to shine’ and also means the 'King'. Patanjali (2,000 - 4,000 BC) is considered the king of Yoga and compiled the Yoga Sutras, which is an authoritive text summarized from the Vedas (6,000 - 8,000 BC). The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are presented in four chapters ~ SAMADHI (goal of Yoga), SADHANA (practice of Yoga), VIBHUTI (powers of Yoga) and KAIVALYAM (benefits of Yoga).

The LEVEL 10 KAIVALYAM training is taken from the third chapter ofVIBHUTI , which is describing our special powers (sidhis) that we attain from practicing Yoga. This consists of Nirodha (understanding the mind), and the Antaraya-s (disturbances of the mind). During this 2 week training we focus on ANTARAYA-S, which describes the nine  mental disturbances of the mind, and the four states of samadhi (gross to subtle to seedless).

MON - FRI: Yoga is a dharsana (reflection) to see our 'mind' and this study is presented Monday to Friday of each week. Each day moves you from gross to subtle; beginning with the study and practice of asana (body), then chanting and study of the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali and finishing with meditation study and practice. Throughout the course of 2 weeks you will naturally move from an external awareness to a more inward focus. Like getting into a canoe each day and learning to paddle with your fellow students, this in-depth journey will transform you with ease.

SAT: Society is built on a fabric of acceptable moral principles and India has two ancient texts which are considered classic 'novels' that every Indian knows from childhood and is richly interweaved into their modern day life. They are the famous 'Ramayama' and the 'Bhagadvad Gita'. During our 2 week study we present a comprehensive introduction of the BHAGAVAD GITA, describing the story and the characters. This is a way of understanding 'dharma' (highest purpose in life) with intriguing and masterful plots emerging throughout this classic novel. This is a compelling study that once you start you will never be able to stop. The jewel of this ancient text is that you begin to understand your own svadharma (self purpose in life) and teaches us 'how to teach' with mastery, which is highly recommended for Yoga teachers and Ayurveda therapists.

The ancient 'Seers' used meditation to see, like an modern x-ray machine tries to see. Self study allows us to see ourself ~ our body, emotions and mind. As we develop these abilities to 'see' we then naturally develop the ability to 'purify'. This makes our journey easier to travel and gives us a greater sense of clarity to make more healthier choices in our personal, family and business lifes. Yoga and Ayurveda are the transformational tools to enlighten and the time proven Teachings of Patanjali will enhance your life, making you 'shine' and helping you to reach your highest potential.

Pleasure vs. Pain

Pleasure has no value. It only creates more desire for more pleasure, and creates more samskaras. Therefore, the Masters are not for pleasures. So they shun pleasure, accept pain, welcome pain, pray for pain, because if for one moment that pain is removed, they may fall into the trap of a good life, a pleasurable life. So, to keep them on their toes, spiritual toes, as it were, they say, 'God, give me everlasting pain that I may not forget you.' Because in pain we call for God; in pleasure we call for ourselves - the lower self.
