Yoga Awareness ~ The International School of Yoga & Ayurveda

PatanjaliThe Yoga Awareness LEVEL 1 SADHANA training is for 2 weeks on the tropical island of Maui. Ted Surman presents an in-depth study of Yoga and Ayurveda which empowers us to deepen our daily practice and to share with others. We study and practice Raja Yoga, which means ‘to shine’ and also means the 'King'. Patanjali (2,000 - 4,000 BC) is considered the king of Yoga and compiled the Yoga Sutras, which is an authoritive text summarized from the Vedas (6,000 - 8,000 BC). The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are presented in four chapters ~ SAMADHI (goal of Yoga), SADHANA (practice of Yoga), VIBHUTI (powers of Yoga) and KAIVALYAM (benefits of Yoga).

The LEVEL 1 SADHANA training is taken from the second chapter of SADHANA, which is how to practice. This consists of Kriya Yoga (attitude), Ashtanga Yoga (method) and Samkhya Yoga (creation). During this 2 week training we focus on KRIYA, which is to develop 'right action and attitude' in your yoga practice, and the klesa-s (mental obstacles) which influence our karmic destiny. Kriya Yoga comprises of three parts: ‘Tapas’ ~ healthy actions, ‘Svadhyaya’ ~ verification of our actions and ‘Isvarapranidhana’ ~ acceptance of our actions.

MON - FRI: YOGA is a dharsana (reflection) to see our 'mind' and this study is presented Monday to Friday of each week. Each day moves you from gross to subtle; beginning with the study and practice of asana (body), then chanting and study of the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali and finishing with meditation study and practice. Throughout the course of 2 weeks you will naturally move from an external awareness to a more inward focus. Like getting into a canoe each day and learning to paddle with your fellow students, this in-depth journey will transform you with ease.

SAT: AYURVEDA is a dharsana (reflection) to see our 'body' and this study is presented on Saturday of each week. Ayurveda is not just information on diet and cleansing, rather it's a meditation on 'Self'. The foundation principle of Ayurveda is 'health' verses 'illness' and during our 2 week study we present a comprehensive introduction of Ayurveda and analysis 'prakrtti', our natural state. With this clarity you can start developing simple and effective ways in your daily life to bring yourself and family from imbalance to balanced health.

The Sadhana Yoga & Ayurveda trainings lays the foundation of Ayurveda for the beginer student. The study is on the 4 pillars of Ayurveda, which supports your life. From this foundation we analyze the prakrtti (health) and vikrtti (disease) of each student. This training gives you an understanding of 'Self' and equips you with practical wats to balance dosa (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) by using the 4 pillars of Ayurveda.

The ancient 'Seers' used YOGA and AYURVEDA as a meditation to see, like an modern x-ray machine tries to see. Self study allows us to see ourself ~ our body, emotions and mind. As we develop these abilities to 'see' we then naturally develop the ability to 'purify'. This makes our journey easier to travel and gives us a greater sense of clarity to make more healthier choices in our personal, family and business lifes. Yoga and Ayurveda are the transformational tools to enlighten and the time proven Teachings of Patanjali will enhance your life, making you 'shine' and helping you to reach your highest potential.

Sports

In sports, there are two things that are necessary: sportsmanship and the ability to concentrate on what you are doing. Sportsmanship is an attitude of the heart, that in sports there is both victory and loss ? and the famous dictum that we play not to win but for the sake of the game. This generosity, or the acceptance, the humility to accept, that failure is an ever-present possibility, and therefore we play only for the game, not to be victorious. And victory goes to the one who can concentrate. Both these abilities are developed by meditation.
