Detachment

In Ramayan, an epic story from India, there is an anecdote. It goes like this: Sita had a parrot. She loved it very much. It died. Her father, Raja Janak, loved his daughter Sita greatly. So, because of her he began to be grieved too. That may bring some to the conclusion that a great saint like Raja Janak was unduly attached to the petty parrot. But whatever may be their justification for it, I believe that if one does not feel grieved at the distress of others, he is devoid of the common sense of humanity or, in other words, he is not a man at all.
