Maui star fruit
It's Star Fruit season again! Carambola, also known as starfruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The fruit is popular throughout Southeast Asia, the South Pacific and parts of East Asia. Rich in antioxidants, potassium, and vitamin C; and low in sugar, sodium, and acid, Averrhoa carambola has both antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. A 2012 report published by the “International Journal of Pharmacy” lists several traditional uses of starfruit: Natives of India drink the juice to allay fever and sooth eye infections. Ayurvedic texts prescribe ripe star fruit as a digestive and tonic.
