We're now back in Waikiki enjoying tropical paradise 🌴

 

Going to India three times a year is a great way to learn the ancient teachings in a practical way. This is why we go there even though it requires lots of time to travel from Hawaii and Japan.

Talking about long distance travel we find that air travel is the hardest of all among other transportations. It starts with the endless hours of booking, checking-in, going through security and sitting in airplane seats for 20-30 hours each way, and then 5-10 hour taxi rides to our Ayurveda health centers. However our major concern is the airplane food. How are you coping with it?

 

Airplane meals are mass-cooked and full of chemicals, namely MSG, GMO, glyphosate and growth hormones. We only eat organic foods at home and avoid processed foods at cafes and restaurants ... but with air-travel foods we've always made exceptions because of the convenience.

 

And is the water filtered? The surprising fact is that the hot water in your coffee and tea are from the taps in airplane galleys, and these have been tested positive for E. coli, coliform bacteria and other germs because they don't clean their water tanks. Airplane water quality can vary by airline and may be contaminated as cited in a 2019 study by DietDetective.com and Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center.

On previous trips we've experienced debilitating jetlag from eating and drinking on flights and at airports. So what can we do to protect ourselves from unhealthy air travel?

 

The solution with our last trip was cooking organic homemade meals and taking them in large thermos containers for the first flight. Then during the airport transit we used a collapsible travel kettle to boil filtered water for our organic dhyatrated meals and tea to take onboard for our connecting flights. And yes we also have a Brita travel water-filter bottle! The thermos meals and a travel kettle are simple ways to reduce jetlag and fatigue so that we can be fit and ready for our studies in India.
