Yoga Testimonials

Yoga Testimonial: on my way to becoming a life-long practitioner of yoga.

My first experience with yoga was watching a Hatha yoga show on television in the 1970’s. Although I had been interested in yoga for sometime, studio locations at that time were pretty much non-existent in Honolulu and long hours at work also did not help. However, my interest was such that, over the years, I bought various books about yoga – Iyengar, Hatha, Bikram to name a few. I once tried a yoga class offered at the gym I joined, but it was at an inconvenient time and wasn’t what I expected.

In 2014, I retired from full-time work. It was then that I started looking for a studio where I could learn yoga. In 2015 I did try a studio, but the few classes I attended were classes where one simply followed the person leading the class. I wasn’t learning anything.

In 2017, at the urging of a friend, I visited Yoga Awareness. Because of my limited experience and lack of confidence in joining a group class, I scheduled private sessions with Masumi. I joined the group class once Masumi determined that I was ready. Since that time, I have not only attended classes regularly, I have also attended the Yoga Immersion and Yoga In-Depth training seminars.

Both Tedd and Masumi are interested in the progress of each student. They are instructors who observe and correct each individual. Tedd especially stresses proper breathing, the mechanics of moving into and out of each asana, and proper form. This is what I was looking for – an environment where I could train and learn yoga. Where once I thought yoga was just asana, I have learned that chanting, breathing, and meditation are integral to the practice of yoga. I appreciate that the goal for each student is to learn as much as possible in order to have a daily home practice. Thanks to Tedd and Masumi and Yoga Awareness, I am on my way to becoming a life-long practitioner of yoga.
